Mohammad Salar Khan

Mohammad Salar Khan (born March 2, 1924 in Kakinada , Madras Presidency , British India ; died September 20, 2002 in Dhaka ) was a Bangladeshi botanist and university professor . Its botanical author abbreviation is " MSKhan ".

Career

Mohammad Salar Khan studied botany at the Aligarh Muslim University in what was then the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh ) and graduated in 1947 with a Master of Science degree . In 1950 he joined as a lecturer at the service of the botanical faculty of the University of Dhaka , he will be up in 1991 as a lecturer, senior lecturer, associate professor and professor taught. 1962 doctorate he attended the University of Edinburgh with a dissertation on the taxonomy of vascular plants for Ph.D.

While studying for a doctorate in the UK in the early 1960s, Khan took part in a University of Oxford botanical expedition to western Turkey. After his return to Dhaka, Khan devoted himself to researching the vascular flora of Bangladesh. Khan was instrumental in establishing the Bangladesh National Herbarium . His more than 150 scientific publications include the first descriptions of 19 species. In addition to his own research, Khan was the editor of the first 57 volumes of the Flora of Bangladesh , which is a complete inventory of the country's plants. In later years Khan became involved in the protection of the biodiversity of Bangladesh and supported the IUCN, also as co-editor of one of the country's first Red Lists. In 1988 Khan was elected to the Linnean Society of London .
