Mohammedia ( Arabic المحمدية, DMG al-Muḥammadīya , Central Atlas Tamazight ⵍⵎⵓⵃⵎⵎⴰⴷⵉⵢⴰ / ⴼⴹⴰⵍⴰ ) is a Moroccan port city with around 200,000 inhabitants on the Atlantic. The original name of the city was Fedala /فضالة / Faḍāla ; in 1959 it was named in honor of King Mohammad V renamed.

Mohammedia is located about 27 km (driving distance) northeast of Casablanca and about 62 km southwest of Rabat on the Atlantic coast in the Casablanca-Settat region .

economy
The city is conveniently located on the A3, which connects Rabat with Casablanca; it is also connected to the railway network. However, the main source of income for the city is the port. In addition, small industry, trade and craft play a not insignificant role. In summer, the beaches of Mohammedia are a popular destination for tourists from Casablanca.
history
The exact founding date of the city is unknown. What is certain is that the city was already a trading center under the Almoravids . From the 14th to the 19th century, the port was a traditional transshipment point for European traders, but also a haven for corsairs . In 1773, Sultan Mulai Muhammad III had the kasbah, a granary, and the white Al-Atik mosque built.
Immediately after the signing of the protectorate treaty between Morocco and France , the colonial government began building modern port facilities in 1913.
