Mokošica is one of the 8 districts of the city of Dubrovnik , which is located in the Croatian Dubrovnik-Neretva County .
Geographical location
Mokošica, consisting of the districts of Stara Mokošica and Nova Mokošica ( German: Old Mokošica and New Mokošica ), is located approx. 6 km from the city center, directly on the Adriatic bay Rijeka Dubrovačka , embedded and surrounded by mountains of the Dinaric Mountains .
history
The origin of the name of Mokošica is derived from the name of the fertility goddess and patron saint of women Mokoš , a figure from Slavic mythology . Settled for several centuries, Mokošica gained regional importance in the 16th century with the establishment of summer residences for Dubrovnik aristocratic families. In the course of the expansion of Dubrovnik, the local town planning authorities decided in the late 1970s to build the settlement Nova Mokošica, which is to be completed with the 5th planning and construction phase and the expansion to the west.
There were many civilian casualties during the Croatian war . After the conquest and occupation of Mokošica by the Yugoslav People's Army and irregulars in the Croatian War , most of the population fled. In contrast to other nearby villages in the Dubrovačko primorje municipality, the settlement remained largely undamaged, which can be attributed to the fact that the commander of the occupying troops had chosen the local elementary school as his headquarters. On May 26, 1992, the occupying forces had to withdraw.
development
While the district of Stara Mokošica has remained unchanged for decades, the development of Nova Mokošica is not yet complete. After the construction of up to 6-storey buildings in the first construction phase in 1980, 2 to 3-storey residential buildings and single-family houses followed in the subsequent phases. The fifth phase is currently in preparation.
traffic
Mokošica is served by the city bus lines 1A and 1B of the Libertas . The construction of the Dubrovnik bridge relieved Mokošica considerably, as the through traffic of the national road D8 from northern Croatia no longer runs through the town along the Rijeka Dubrovačka bay .

population
The population consists mainly of Croatians , with a small percentage of Serbs and Bosnians . According to the 2001 census , Mokošica had 7,528 inhabitants, 6041 people in Nova Mokošica and 1,487 people in Stara Mokošica.
economy
The largest branch of the economy, in which the majority of the population is active, is tourism . The majority of the inhabitants of Mokošica commute to work every day to the city center of Dubrovnik, 6 km away. In Stara Mokošica only a small shipyard , a restaurant , a small retail shop and a tobacco shop offer work. In Nova Mokošica - originally conceived as a dormitory town - a larger shopping center is to provide a significant number of jobs in the future, as will the expansion of the marina in the nearby Komolac district.
