The Mondpalast von Wanne-Eickel is a popular theater in the Ruhr area . The theater was opened on January 28, 2004 by Christian Stratmann , brother of the cabaret artist Ludger Stratmann . Together with the latter, he ran the Stratmanns Theater Europahaus in Essen until the end of 2003 , but withdrew in favor of the Mondpalast. In an interview with Welt am Sonntag in early 2005, Stratmann stated that the aim of the theater was to perform regional plays with a permanent ensemble . This is a unique selling point compared to a guest house like that of his brother. Stratmann explained the main focus: “We primarily use clichés . Typical Ruhr area staff such as the miner, the pigeon fancier , the pub owner and the football fan perform with us ”. The pieces are usually written by the Ruhr area author Sigi Domke . The head dramaturge of the house is the founding director, director and actor Thomas Rech. Mondpalast comedies can only be seen in the Mondpalast. The moon palace is also the godfather for the football stadium of the DSC Wanne-Eickel . The stadium in the Wanne-Süd sports park has been called the Mondpalast Arena since August 9, 2009 .

history

The theater is located in the municipal hall building (former. Imperial Hall and city garden hall) of the city park in Herne district tray (up to 1,975 separate town Wanne-Eickel ). The Wilhelmine Art Nouveau building was built in 1911 and has seen a long theater history since then. From Kurt Seiffert in the 1920s to Zarah Leander to Theo Lingen and Maria Schell , many theater greats who mean the world stood here on the boards. With the Wilhelmine main building and a post-modern foyer, the building itself is a piece of Ruhr architecture between tradition and modernity. With 500 seats, the house has a significantly larger capacity than other popular theaters such as the Ohnsorg Theater in Hamburg and the Millowitsch Theater in Cologne. According to Christian Stratmann, more than 800,000 guests since it was founded make it one of the largest popular theaters in Germany. The restaurant in the same building, the Palastkantine , is open around the theater performances and also during the breaks. A highlight in the history of the house was the visit of the then Federal President Horst Köhler and his wife Eva Luise in October 2009, who attended a performance of the foosball comedy "Ronaldo & Julia" in the Mondpalast.

Comedies

The best-known and most successful production of the moon theater is the comedy "Ronaldo & Julia", which has been staged continuously since the opening. Thematically based on the Shakespeare drama Romeo and Juliet , the play tells of two families who each run a pub in Wanne-Eickel. While the Montakowskis are attached to the football club FC Schalke 04 , the Kapulinskis are feverishly for Borussia Dortmund . Traditionally, the supporters of these clubs are very enemies (see also: Revierderby ), so that the developing love between the royal blue Roland “Ronaldo” Montakowski and the black and yellow Julia Kapulinski is not a good star. Will the love between the two override the enmity? For the 500th performance on October 17, 2007, the former Schalke manager Rudi Assauer took on a brief guest role.

The Mondpalast gained nationwide fame through "Dinner for Wan (ne)", until 2014 the only Ruhr area version of the New Year's Eve sketch Dinner for One by Freddie Frinton. This comedy has been shown in a recording on WDR television every New Year's Eve since 2007. In February 2016, the WDR recorded a TV version of the soccer comedy "Ronaldo & Julia" in the Mondpalast von Wanne-Eickel and in the RevuePalast Ruhr at Zeche Ewald in Herten, which was first broadcast in April 2016 on WDR television.

In the past there have been individual guest appearances such as B. with the play "Auf der Wilden Rita" on the North Sea island of Norderney , with "Ronaldo and Julia" in Dortmund, Gladbeck and Unna as well as with the "Flurwoche" in the Grugahalle Essen.
