Monica Christina Zak (born January 27, 1939 in Dresden ) is a Swedish writer and journalist .

Life

Zak's Czech father Franz Zak and Swedish mother Elsa Hellstrand fled Germany to Sweden shortly before the start of the Second World War . She grew up in Örebro , graduated from high school in 1960, studied in 1962 at the Gothenburg Commercial College and at the Institute for Journalism . She worked as a consultant for the Swedish Writer's Center (Swedish: Författarcentrum ) from 1976 to 1977 and as a daily and trade press journalist for the Örebro newspaper Nerikes Allehanda (1957-60), the monthly Damernas värld (1963) and the newspaper Aftonbladet (1965-71) . From 1984 to 1990 she worked as a freelancer for the Barnens Värld reporting agency . From 1990 onwards she traveled around the world as an international newspaper reporter for ten years, delivering reports from Guatemala , Mexico , the Dominican Republic , Algeria , Panama , Costa Rica , Kenya , Peru , Tanzania , El Salvador , China and Somalia .

In the course of her working life to date, Zak has written around 45 works, including many books for children and young people, most of which are set in Central or South America . Her works have been translated into more than twelve languages. For some time she was a member of the Swedish Children's Book Academy (Swedish: Svenska barnboksakademien ). Her book Puma's Daughter was awarded the Nils Holgersson plaque and was made into a film in 1994.
