Monika Stocker , Monika Stocker-Meier, (born July 1, 1948 in Aarau ) is a Swiss politician ( GP ).

From 1968 to 1973 she studied social sciences at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . She has been a member of the Greens since 1986. From 1987 to 1991 she was a national councilor and at the same time took up teaching activities at schools for social work. In 1991 she initiated the women's session in Bern. Between March 1994 and July 2008 she was city councilor and head of the social department of the city of Zurich , succeeding Emilie Lieberherr . She was considered a pioneer when it comes to jobs for welfare recipients.

In 2007 she was sharply criticized from various sides across Switzerland for her social welfare policy. After the so-called Spain case and later the so-called hotel case - it was about a family who had been accommodated in a Zurich hotel at the expense of the social welfare office - had become public, the Weltwoche in particular featured a whole series of articles Grievances in the Zurich social welfare office. At the beginning of 2008, two controllers from the social welfare office, Margrit Zopfi and Esther Wyler, came out as informants for Weltwoche. The two whistleblowers were awarded the Prix ​​Courage in 2010 . They were legally acquitted in the first instance of the charge of breach of official secrecy, but the higher court came to a guilty verdict in 2011, which was confirmed by the federal court.

On February 5, 2008, she announced her resignation from the Zurich City Council in July 2008 due to health problems. Monika Stocker is married and has two grown children.

Since her retirement she has been working on a voluntary basis in various projects, for example as President of the Zurich and Schaffhausen Section of the UBA Foundation for Conflicts in Old Age. From 2013 she was co-head of the editorial team of the journal Neue Ways - Articles on Religion and Socialism .
