The species occurs in the Brazilian Amazon region south of the Amazon and has so far been detected in the states of Pará , Mato Grosso , Rondônia and Acre .

It was first described in February 2017 and named after the Saci , a one-legged, goblin-like creature with a red cap from Brazilian mythology.

features

The specimens examined for the first description had a head body length of 9.3 to 11.7 cm, a 4.1 to 5.9 cm long tail, 1.2 to 1.5 cm long hind feet and a weight of 17 to 20 g. The back of Monodelphis saci is brownish, the head conspicuously reddish. The fur on the chin, throat, groin and flanks is also brownish, but whitish on the chest and stomach. Front and rear paws are covered with short, light brown hair on their upper side. The tail is dark brown on top and lightly spotted below. The body color extends further back on the underside of the tail than on the top. The scales on the hairless end of the tail are arranged in spirals.

Monodelphis saci occurs in parts of the distribution area together with the Emilia shrew rat ( M. emiliae ), the Amazon shrew rat ( M. glirina ) and Monodelphis touan . The species is smaller than the other shrew pouch rats and is brownish with a reddish tint only on the head. The Amazon shrew pouch -rat and Monodelphis touan have reddish body sides, the Emilia shrew- pouch -rat has a red head and a partially gray body.
