Monroe Owsley

Monroe Righter Owsley (born August 11, 1900 in Atlanta , Georgia , † June 7, 1937 in Belmont , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Monroe Owsley was the son of the stage actress Gertrude Owsley. As a teenager, he first followed in his mother's footsteps, took acting lessons and played on Broadway in the mid-1920s . In the late 1920s, he played his first small supporting roles in Hollywood films.

Owsley gained fame in 1930 for his supporting role in the Hollywood film Holiday alongside Ann Harding . In the same year he played his first leading role in the Hollywood film Free Love alongside Conrad Nagel and Genevieve Tobin . A year later he starred in the Hollywood film Honor Among Lovers alongside Fredric March and Claudette Colbert , and a supporting role in the Hollywood film This Modern Age alongside Joan Crawford .

In the following years Owsley played numerous other leading roles in Hollywood films, including 1932 in Call Her Savage alongside the first It-Girl Clara Bow and in 1933 in Later Marriage excluded alongside Bette Davis . From the mid-1930s he played almost only supporting roles.

Owsley died in 1937 of a heart attack in a traffic accident at the age of 36. He was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale , just like his colleague Jean Harlow , who died the same day .
