Monsieur Batignole (reference title: Monsieur Batignole - hero against his will) is a war drama by and with Gérard Jugnot . It is set during World War II and was shot in 2002 .
action
Paris in the summer of 1942 during the occupation by the Nazis: Apparently forced by the food rationing, thieves steal Monsieur Edmond Batignole's meat and sausage from his small butcher shop. Edmond suspects, incited by the collaborator Pierre-Jean Lamour, Simon Bernstein, the son of a wealthy Jewish family of doctors who live in the same house.
When Edmond confronts the boy's father, he inadvertently delays the Bernstein family's escape. Meanwhile, Pierre-Jean calls the local police and reports his intention to flee - and the whole family is finally arrested.
Edmond then goes back to his job as a butcher, albeit shocked by the events. Meanwhile, Pierre-Jean, the fiancé of Edmond's daughter Micheline, arranges through his relationships that Edmond receives the large apartment of the deported Bernstein family. Edmond also becomes, more or less involuntarily, purveyor to the court of the German commandant's office.
While Edmond is having a little party for his new "clients" in the "Aryanized" apartment, Simon Bernstein, the little boy, suddenly appears again. He was able to flee from the deportation and is now looking for his family again. Edmond hides him - when he doesn't want to leave - in the attic and provides him with food.
When the boy's hiding place threatens to be exposed, Edmond tries, driven by his guilty conscience, to find an escape helper for Simon.
As a result, Edmond now arouses the interest of Germans himself. When Simon's cousins turn up, everything is exposed and Edmond is killing Pierre-Jean when he wants to hand over the children to the Germans. Edmond fled to the country with the three children, and a dangerous escape to Switzerland began. Through ill-considered statements and actions by the children, Edmond even falls into the sights of the Resistance , who consider him a traitor.
