The Monte Rua is one of the Euganean Hills in the Veneto province of Padua . It is located in the Natural Park of these hills in the municipality of Torreglia . At the top there is a Camaldolese hermitage .

Infrastructure

From Torreglia's historic district of Torreglia Alta at a height of 132 m, a narrow road leads upwards through the chestnut forests to the bars in front of the hermitage. Halfway up there is a restaurant with a wide panoramic terrace in the north-eastern Euganean thermal region with the thermal baths of Montegrotto Terme and Abano Terme , on clear days as far as Padua. Another, higher lookout point ( Belvedere della Croce ) opens the view to the southeast over Galzignano Terme and Battaglia Terme to Monselice and beyond to the plain towards Chioggia .

Camaldolese hermitage

The hermitage was originally a Benedictine monastery, which was founded in 1339 by two Camaldolese hermits in honor of the Annunciation . The first wooden structure was replaced by a stone structure after 1537 and received its characteristic shape, which has largely been retained until today. In addition to the single-nave church (built in 1542) there are common rooms (refectory, chapter house and hiker's hostel - foresteria ) and 14 monk cells (combined bedroom and study) in small individual houses; in between there are orchards and vegetable gardens cultivated by the monks. After the secularization by Napoleon in the course of the fall of the Republic of Venice , the complex lay fallow; In 1863 it was settled again by Camaldolese. Today there are only about a dozen friars left.

The hermitage is surrounded by a 1.4 km long wall that can be walked around. Access to the interior is only permitted for men at certain times and only for the purpose of attending church services.
