Galzignano Terme is a municipality with 4363 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Padua . It is partly agricultural and partly health resort (implicit in the name suffix terms ). The municipality is partly in the Euganean Hills Natural Park .
geography
The municipality, which includes several scattered villages next to the center, is enclosed in a semicircle by the forests of Monte Rua (416 m), Monte Orsara (362 m) and Monte Gallo (385 m). The areas on the slopes of these hills are mainly used for agriculture for fruit and olive cultivation.
At the foot of the hills the municipal area runs out into the Po Valley . A spa center consisting of four hotels has established itself there, which uses bromine-iodine sources at a temperature of 87 ° C for thermal baths and mud therapies , which emerge from Civrana in the east . The spa center is also a wellness area for tourists, and a 9-hole golf course adds a sporty dimension to the facility.
Together with the neighboring spa towns of Abano Terme , Montegrotto Terme and Battaglia Terme, the spa hotel complex of Galzignano Terme is part of the so-called Euganean thermal region .
history
The area belonged to the Republic of Venice until 1797 , according to archaeological finds it was already inhabited in prehistoric times.
From the 15th century onwards, numerous villas and mansions were built as summer residences for wealthy Venetians, mostly individually on the peaks of the hills. Some of these villas are now derelict, others have been restored and are privately owned. An early example of the Venetian Renaissance is the Villa Rizzoli Benedetti , built in the 15th century (rebuilt in the 18th century). The Villa La Civrana from the 17th century, property of the feudal lord Emo Capodilista, the Villa Saggini (end of the 18th century) and the Villa Boggian (second half of the 18th century) date back to later eras . In the summer months, the park of Villa Barbarigo Pizzone Ardemani in the district of Valsanzibio , which is equipped with ingenious water features and is considered a prime example of Baroque horticulture in Veneto, is open to the public . Francesco Zuane Barbarigo and his son Antonio had the villa built for them in the 17th century.
In 1962 a 27-hole golf course was built around the villa gardens, laid out by the American golf architect Commander John D. Harris.

Attractions
Galzignano Terme is the starting point for hikes and mountain bike tours in the natural park of the Euganean Hills, which is largely inaccessible by car ( Parco regional dei Colli Euganei ). Sights in the outskirts of the nature park in the municipality of Galzigano Terme are particular
- the gardens of Villa Barbarigo in the district of Valsanzibio (see above) and
- the Church of the Assumption ( Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta ) on the hill of the same name above the town center; it was rebuilt in 1674 in place of a forerunner from the 13th century and houses an altarpiece from the 17th century depicting the Assumption of Mary with two saints. Most of the frescoes in the mostly closed church have not been preserved. Santa Maria Assunta is no longer used for church services after a new parish church was built in the town center in 1961.
- On Monte Orbieso the ruins of the former Benedictine priory of San Eusebio (12th century), which according to a register from 1518 once had 72 agricultural areas and with another Benedictine monastery, consecrated to the Annunciation, by a mule path ( Strada Fonda ) was connected; of this, too, only ruins remain. Today a hiking trail ( Sentiero Atestino , 22 km long) follows the historical traces.
Festivals
