After Abano Terme with 11,573 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), Montegrotto Terme is the second largest city in the Euganean spa area in the Italian province of Padua. The city borders Abano in the north, with which it has almost grown together over the past few decades. It lies east of the Euganean Hills and reaches the first hill foothills. The distance to Venice is 45 kilometers. Padua is 12 kilometers north of Montegrotto.
Excavations in the city area prove that several precious baths already existed during the Roman Empire, which were built to use the thermal waters emerging from the depths here. There is also evidence that bathing facilities already existed in pre-Roman times. The name Montegrotto is derived from the Latin name "Mons Aegrotorum" (mountain of the sick). In the Middle Ages the place was called "San Pietro Montagnon", probably derived from the name of the ruling family Montagnone.
The administration of Montegrotto has seen many changes over time. In 1921 the area was declared a municipality called S.Pietro Montagnon. In 1934 the name was changed to Montegrotto, as the railway station on the Padua – Bologna line already bore this name. Since the 1950s, Montegrotto has become an important thermal center with currently 36 thermal hotels. In addition to Italian guests, many foreign spa guests, especially those from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, visit the thermal baths of Montegrotto, mainly to get relief from rheumatism and joint pain. The thermal water also matures the mud , which also helps against rheumatic diseases and other diseases of the musculoskeletal system and in the rehabilitation of sports accidents.
