The Monterey was an American passenger ship .

history

The ship was built in 1931. The launch took place on October 10, 1931, on April 20, 1932, the Monterey was delivered to the Matson Navigation Co in San Francisco and used from June of that year for cruises from San Francisco to Honolulu and Sydney .

From December 1941, the ship was used as a troop transport for the US Army . After the Second World War , the ship was to be converted back into a passenger ship from 1946. However, the conversion was stopped in 1947 and the ship was initially launched . From April 1956 to May 1957, the ship was finally rebuilt in Newport News and then used as Matsonia between San Francisco or Los Angeles and Honolulu.

After the number of passengers continued to decline, the Matsonia was initially launched in 1962. However, when the sister ship Lurline was decommissioned due to engine damage and sold to the shipping company Chandris Lines, where she was later used as the Ellinis , the Matsonia was renamed as a replacement in Lurline and was used again on the old route from December 6, 1963 .

The Britanis off Key West in 1990

In June 1970 the "new" Lurline (Ex- Matsonia , ex- Monterey ) was sold to Ajax Navigation Co in Piraeus and, after being converted, was used as a Britanis in the liner service between Great Britain and Australia. In May 1982, the ship went to the Fantasy Cruises shipping company, which used it for Bermuda cruises. For a long time was Britanis the senior cruise ship in the world.

In 1994, the chartered Military Sealift Command , the Britanis to them in Guantanamo Bay to use as a shelter for refugees. From the end of October 1995, the ship was in Tampa .

In January 1998 the Britanis was sold to a new owner and renamed Belofin-1 . Plans to use the ship in San Francisco as a hotel ship were abandoned. In September 2000 the former Monterey was towed by the Ukrainian tug Iribis to India for scrapping . On the way there, the ship was listed and sank on October 21, 2000 about 50  nautical miles from Cape Town .
