Vegetative characteristics

The Montpellier rockrose is a strongly aromatic shrub that is 60 to 120 (up to 180) centimeters tall.

The cross-opposite, sitting leaves are 2 to 6 centimeters long and linear-lanceolate. The leaf margins are strongly rolled down. The upper side of the leaf is dark green and sparsely hairy, the underside is lighter and thickly star-haired.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is one-sided with two to eight flowers. The flower stalks are very sticky-glandular.

The flowers are 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The five sepals are veined in red, the outer ones somewhat larger than the inner ones. The five petals are white and slightly edged. The numerous stamens are yellow.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

ecology

The flowering period extends from April to June. The flowers are very short-lived, but this is offset by the general abundance of flowers. The Montpellier cistus has the property that it can recover after the forest fires that often occur. After the leaf falls, the next generation of leaves appears, which results in an evergreen appearance.

Occurrence

The Montpellier rock rose is a western and central Mediterranean floral element . It comes westward to the Canary Islands and Madeira and eastward to the Aegean coast of mainland Greece with local outposts on Naxos and Crete , the Turkish Aegean coast and Cyprus . It is a naturalized neophyte in the US state of California and the Australian state of Victoria .

The Montpellier rockrose occurs in clearings in the forest and maquis and in Mediterranean dwarf shrub willows at lower to medium altitudes and is often a stock-forming plant there. In the Canary Islands it lives in the pine forest level. It usually grows on weakly acidic, nutrient-poor soils .

Taxonomy

The first publication of Cistus monspeliensis was in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . Within the genus Cistus it is placed in the subgenus Leucocistus and the section Ledonia .
