The Mooki River is a river in the north of the Australian state of New South Wales .
geography
It is the main river of the Liverpool Plains . Its source is on the northern slopes of the Liverpool Range and the Coolah Tops at the confluence of Omaleagh Creek and Phillips Creek . From there it flows northwards.
There are no major cities on the river, but the cities of Quirindi and Werris Creek are within its catchment area . For the most part, good farming land surrounds the river. Only a small part of the original vegetation remains in the river valley, but river eucalyptus and other trees grow on the river bank. The Kamilaroi Highway and the northwest railroad cross the Mooki River at Breeza .
The Mooki River flows into the Namoi River directly north of Gunnedah .
history
The earliest expedition by Europeans in this area was that of John Oxley and his group in August 1818. The name Mooki comes from the Aborigines who traveled along the lower reaches of the river.
In November 2000, the Gunnedah River and the surrounding area flooded.
The Mooki River is mentioned in The Old Timer's Steeplechase by the famous poet AB "Banjo" Paterson .
