The Moor Cottage pond is a former clay pit in the district Volkmarode in Braunschweig , Lower Saxony . The area around the pond was built with residential houses after the associated steam brickwork was closed in 1978 and the edge was redesigned into a local recreation area.

Geography and geology

The Moorhüttenteich is located in the northwestern local area of Volkmarode. Its surroundings are drained to the Sandbach . It is surrounded by an approximately 20-meter-wide green area, which, with the exception of the north side, is followed by residential developments. To the north, the landscape merges into the Schunter Aue.

In the outcrop you can find brick clay with gypsum crystals and clay iron as well as geodes of the Lower Cretaceous , especially Barremium .

history

The name goes back to the brickworks Moorhütte , which was founded in 1799 by the Braunschweig publisher Friedrich Vieweg with the purpose of having his publishing house built on Burgplatz, today's State Museum . The brick factory was owned by the family for four generations, was sold in 1893 and passed to Fritz Deike in 1900. His family also ran the business for three generations until it was closed in 1978. After production ceased, the factory buildings were demolished and the moor hut settlement built in their place .

Fishing waters

The pond is owned by the city of Braunschweig, which has leased it to a Braunschweig fishing club. This lists eel, perch, pike, carp, tench, white fish and pikeperch in the fish population.
