Morazán is a town with around 2,500 inhabitants and a municipality in the El Progreso department in Guatemala . It is located 102 km northeast of Guatemala City and 31 km northwest of Guastatoya at an altitude of 350 m. A few kilometers south of the village runs the national road 17 (CA 14), which leads from El Rancho on the Atlantic highway CA 9 north into the Verapaz region.
The 329 km² large municipality extends between the Sierra de Chuacús and the Sierra de las Minas in the north and the valley of the Río Motagua in the south. It has a total of around 13,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom live in smaller rural settlements and villages, including San Clemente, Los Aristondos, Marajuma, El Bijagual, San Vicente, El Portezuelo and Cerro Grande.
Neighboring municipalities are San Jerónimo (Baja Verapaz) in the north, San Agustín Acasaguastlán in the east, Guastatoya and Sanarate in the south, and Salamá in the west in the neighboring department of Baja Verapaz .
Morazán used to have the indigenous name Tocoy Tzima , which means "black wasp". In 1887 the place was renamed in honor of the Central American statesman José Francisco Morazán Quezada . The place belonged to the Baja Verapaz department until 1934.
