action

The story set in Lucca begins with the death of the businessman Marco Pierboni in the garden of his villa outside the city, even if the body is found near his factory. At the same time, while studying in a winter garden, the young Sandra Durani disappears and is later found dead on the banks of the Serchio River . At the same time, a number of anonymous letters are circulating in the city, creating a climate of suspicion in the investigation. Paolo Roversi, a friend of Sandra, is himself murdered while trying to exonerate himself from the charge of double homicide.

In response to these crimes, Nicole Venturi, the French journalist and mother of Sandra, who works closely with her colleague Andrea Baresi, begins to take a closer look at the case of Police Chief Stefano Avanzo and to expose the identity of the murderer. Severa Scali, entrepreneur and governess of Villa Pierboni and best friend of Nicole, turns out to be the latter in order to avenge the death of her own daughter. She committed suicide when she was abandoned by Marco Pierboni. The third murder was committed by Scali due to the fact that Paolo Roversi had something to do with stealing paintings.

Immediately after the Scali confession, Nicole Venturi discovers the authors of the anonymous letters. The ten letters in total, with the exception of the last, from Dr. Guido Braschi, written in a desperate attempt to spare Matilde Pierboni further pain, was written by Filippo Pierboni, the entrepreneur's son, who in his desperation also sought suicide but did not find it.

In the final scene, Nicole greets her friend and detective Avanzo before leaving Lucca in front of the train, and both promise each other that sooner or later they will meet again.
