The Mordovia Arena ( Russian Мордо́вия Аре́на Mordówija Aréna ) is a football stadium in the Russian city of Saransk , Republic of Mordovia . Four games of the 2018 World Cup were played in the facility . The football arena is also the new home of the Mordowija Saransk football club . The total area of the building is 122,700 square meters. The arena is located in the city center and is within walking distance of the most important facilities of the urban infrastructure. The basis for the appearance of the stadium was the sun - the main symbol of the ancient myths and legends of the Mordovian people. After the World Cup, it is planned to convert the stadium into the largest sports, culture and leisure center in Saransk and Mordovia.

history

The decision to build the stadium in Saransk was made before Russia was chosen to host the World Cup. At the beginning of the 2018 World Cup, the stadium should have 44,442 seats. After the tournament is over, the stadium is to be reduced to a permanent capacity of 25,000 seats. According to preliminary plans, the shape and color of the new arena should resemble the red sun in the flag of Mordovia.

Construction began in 2010, when roads were being built in the floodplains of the Insar River in the Volgograd region . The stadium was originally scheduled to be completed in 2012 and was to coincide with two events: the 1000th anniversary of the unification of Mordovia with the peoples of the Russian state and the 2012 Olympic Games . The opening of the stadium was then postponed to 2017.

The developer of the stadium is the company "Sport-Engineering". The first lawn mowing took place on November 2, 2017. The first game in the stadium took place on April 21, 2018. At the end of 2017, the stadium in Saransk got its current appearance. A skeleton made of metal structures was covered with decorative panels, which now define the appearance of the complex. The interior work, the installation of elevators and infrastructure work around the stadium were also completed.

On April 9, 2018, the stadium received approval for match operations from FIFA . The Mordovia Arena is one of the last World Cup venues to be approved for operation. Only the Kosmos Arena in Samara was completed later, on April 28, 2018.

Technical data and design features

The stadium has a tall two-story stylobate. The stadium's shell, made of metal plates, merges with the roof. The west facade of the stadium faces the city center and the banks of the Insar River. To ensure good visibility, no spectator seat is more than 90 meters away from the center circle. The grandstands are divided into four sectors and subsectors. Each sector has its own entrances, emergency exits, snack stands, aid points and barrier-free toilets. There are spaces in the stands for wheelchair users and their companions as well as spaces for people with hearing impairments, which are within sight of information boards and LED screens. There is a separate family section with children's playrooms nearby. There are also VIP seats and a presidential box. There are also spaces for the media, a room for press conferences, the mixed zone for communication between the press and the players, as well as a separate TV and radio studio. After the World Cup, the stadium is to be converted into the largest sports, cultural and leisure center in Saransk and Mordovia.
