Moritz Ebeling , also Mauritius Ebeling (* in Lübeck ; † April 5, 1537 ibid) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and canon at Lübeck Cathedral .

Life

Moritz Ebeling, as evidenced by his coat of arms with a crossbar, came from a patrician Lübeck council family. A Heinrich Ebeling had become in 1451 councilor of the city and since 1452 also a member of the circle of society ; his son Johann Ebeling also became councilor in Lübeck in 1506. Heinrich's grandson and Johann's son or nephew Moritz Ebeling studied at the University of Rostock from 1496 . He received his bachelor's degree in 1498 in Rostock and his master's degree from the Faculty of Philosophy in the winter semester 1500/1501. In 1512 he was given his doctorate legum .

In 1521 he received a grand prebend at Lübeck Cathedral and resided here from 1523 until his death. The statement to be found in the older literature that he became a Protestant and married the widow Anneke Krull in 1535 is based on a mix-up with the Lübeck citizen Mauris Ebeling.

Ebeling was buried under a figure grave plate in Lübeck Cathedral. In a Renaissance arched niche, it shows the standing figure of the canon in scholarly costume, holding goblet and book in his hands. The coats of arms of his parents (Ebeling and Buk / Bock) and his paternal grandparents (Ebeling and Ilhorn) can be found in the corners; the surrounding inscription gives the date of death, name and status of the deceased, combined with the traditional Catholic invitation to intercede orate pro eo . The grave slab is now erected in the southern ambulatory in front of the former St. Rochus Chapel.

His preamble went to Hinrich Barschampe.
