Moritz Engelbrecht von Kursell (born June 10, 1744 in Echmes ; † October 2, 1799 in Orrisaar ) was Estonian knighthood governor , government aristocratic marshal , Russian real councilor , president of the court of conscience in Estonia , curator of the cathedral school in Reval .

Moritz Engelbrecht came from the German-Baltic Kursell family . His parents were Christopher Engelbrecht von Kursell (1685–1756) and Gertrude Sophie von Schwengelm. He married Helene Freiin von Stackelberg on June 8, 1769 .

Life

Moritz Engelbrecht von Kursell attended the school at Berge Kloster near Magdeburg , where he distinguished himself through his talent for ancient languages . Studied at the University of Leipzig . In May 1767 he was appointed Secretary of the Economy of the Estonian Knighthood, in this position until January 25, 1777. From 1777 appointed man judge and curator of the Reval Cathedral School. Was committed to maintaining the school when it was closed for financial reasons. Judge of conscience in Estonia from 1783 to 1796. The institute of the conscience court was set up by Tsarina Catherine II and had to decide not on the basis of laws, but on conscience and common sense. On February 4, 1783 elected to the knighthood captain, the chairman of the Estonian knighthood for three years. During his tenure, the aristocratic self-government in the Baltic provinces was suspended by Tsarina Catherine II and replaced by the governor's constitution issued in 1775 for all of Russia. This reform was only reversed with the death of Catherine. Therefore Kursell was forced to resign from the office of knight captain in September 1783 and to be elected as governor aristocratic marshal according to the new constitution. He held this office until 1786. Moritz Engelbrecht von Kursell was the master of Orrisaar and Essenberg in Estonia.
