Moritz Ensinger

Moritz Ensinger (* around 1430 in Bern ; † before February 26, 1483 in Lenzburg near Aarau ) was a Swabian builder and stonemason . He was the son of the Ulm cathedral builder Matthäus Ensinger , his brother was Vincenz Ensinger .

Life

Little is known about Moritz Ensinger's life. Ensinger was first mentioned in 1449 as a stonemason at Ulm Minster and in 1465 he succeeded his father, Matthäus cathedral master builder in Ulm. In 1477 he gave up this office. In 1478 he acquired citizenship in Constance and bought a house there, which he sold again in 1479. He lived in Lenzburg during his illness and died there. His sister married the carver Michel Erhart in 1469 .

Moritz Ensinger probably designed the sacrament house in Ulm Minster as early as 1462 and built it until around 1471. Here he introduced new motifs and style principles into the architecture of Ulm, such as branch motifs and curving branches . Here he worked with the sculptors Hans Multscher and Jörg Syrlin the Elder , who made figures for it.

From 1465 Moritz Ensinger was employed as a cathedral builder for ten years and from 1470 for life. He vaulted the central nave and continued the tower. He made a crack in the Ulm Minster Tower, which no longer exists and of which only a photograph still exists. It is assumed that he ended his activity in Ulm around 1477.

He was consulted at the Munich Liebfrauenkirche (1474) and in Nördlingen at the St. George's Church (1472) for structural advice. It is known that Moritz Ensinger had knowledge of town planning and fortress construction.
