The Moritzplatz is a place in the city of Augsburg and also a transfer point in public transport in the city. Its namesake is the adjacent Catholic parish church of St. Moritz .

Geographical location

Moritzplatz consists of the roughly square square west of the Moritzkirche and the elongated square north parallel to the church, which appears like the east end of Bürgermeister-Fischer-Straße, but is nominally part of Moritzplatz.

The Bürgermeister-Fischer-Strasse, which leads from Moritzplatz to Königsplatz to the west , was only broken through in 1906. The Weberhaus , located north of Moritzplatz, was rebuilt in a similar form after its destruction in the war in 1959. The entrance is on Philippine-Welser-Straße next to it. The area around the Merkurbrunnen northeast of the church does not belong to Moritzplatz, but is part of the adjacent Maximilianstrasse . In the south, the Zeugplatz directly adjoins Moritzplatz .

Building on Moritzplatz

Catholic parish church of St. Moritz

The former canon church goes back to a monastery founded by Bishop Bruno von Augsburg in 1020 and is consecrated to Saint Mauritius . The core of today's building dates back to 1314 and was adapted to the Baroque style in 1714/1715 . The Moritzkirche was badly hit in the British bombing raid on Augsburg in February 1944 and was only rebuilt in a simpler form between 1946 and 1950. The church is located in the middle of Augsburg's pedestrian zone .

Weaver house

The Weberhaus on Moritzplatz

The former guild house of the Augsburg weavers is particularly noticeable because of its facade painting. In 1389 it was bought by the weavers' guild for 700 guilders and after the general dissolution of the guilds in Augsburg in 1548 it became the property of the imperial city . This commissioned the city painter Johann Matthias Kager in 1605 with the frescoing of the outer walls. In 1607 he completed the work.

At the beginning of 1913, the original weaver's house was demolished in favor of a new street layout on the Bürgermeister-Fischer-Strasse and replaced by a new building based on the historical model. After the building had been repainted by Josef Hengge and Otto Michael Schmitt in 1936 , the weaver's house was destroyed in the bombing of Augsburg in February 1944. It was only rebuilt true to the original in 1958. Otto Michael Schmitt added frescoes again between 1959 and 1961. After a roof fire in June 2004, the Augsburger Weberhaus was renovated, and thanks to many sponsors, the facade was painted again.

Schranne

Located on the north side of the Moritzkirche , the Schranne houses a large number of small shops and also serves as a shelter for the Moritzplatz tram and bus stop. The reinforced concrete building was erected between 1979 and 1980 and is optically based on an old granary that was in the same place until it was demolished in 1906.

Moritzplatz today

Today Moritzplatz is located in the middle of Augsburg's pedestrian zone and is one of the busiest public transport stops in the city. Due to its central location, it is a preferred location for smaller open-air events and is often used by associations and political parties to set up their information stands. The once numerous local retailers around Moritzplatz have been exposed to competition from retail chains for several years , which has already replaced some long-established shops.

From the south side of the square you get to the church Moritzsaal, which is used for various events. There are open-air cafes and restaurants facing the Merkur Fountain.
