Bangsamoro , officially English Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao ("Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao"), abbreviated BARMM , Filipino Rehiyong Awtonomo ng Bangsamoro sa Muslim Mindanao , is a in January 2019 from the former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) formed autonomous region in the south of the Philippines , which includes the areas with a Muslim majority on Mindanao Island and the islands of the Sulu Archipelago .

Bangsamoro is made up of the Malay bangsa , "nation" and Spanish moros , (cf. " Moors "), German derived from Moroland . The region stands in the succession of the historical Sultanate of Maguindanao in the center and west of the island of Mindanao and on the Sulu Archipelago. Islamist groups such as the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) understand Bangsamoro to mean the creation of an independent Islamic state that extends beyond the previous Muslim district on Mindanao and that should include other surrounding islands and parts of Borneo .

The name "Bangsamoro" is also used in other media , often as an expression for very insecure regions, which are assumed to have the Philippine central government not having full state authority and the monopoly of violence , and is therefore a synonym for violence - and kidnapping prone areas.

The Spanish word "Moro", which is meant to be derogatory, is used by Christians in Spain and the Philippines as a disparaging term for Muslims. However , this name was proudly chosen as their own designation by Muslims on the southern Philippine islands .

The area claimed by the MILF includes the Muslim-inhabited areas in Mindanao, the Sulu Archipelago , southern Palawan , Basilan and their neighboring islands. The Muslims make up about 5 percent of the total population of the island state.

The Muslim agitation on the southern Philippine islands is partly the result of the ideology of Islamic expansion , partly the Spanish and American colonization and partly the result of the centralized politics with the consequence that the disparity between Manila and ARMM is very large.

On March 27, 2014, the Philippine President Benigno Aquino and the leader of the MILF, Murad Ebrahim , signed a peace treaty that put an end to the decades-long struggle for independence in the area. It also provides for the establishment of an autonomous region of Bangsamoro.
