Morris Hall
Morris Halle (born July 23, 1923 in Liepāja as Moriss Pinkovics ; † April 2, 2018 ) was a Latvian - American linguist and professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .
Halle was best known for his pioneering work on generative phonology . He wrote On Accent and Juncture in English together with Noam Chomsky and Fred Lukoff in 1956 and The Sound Pattern of English together with Chomsky in 1968 .
In the early 1990s, he and Alec Marantz wrote some papers that led to the family of theories of distributed morphology , which is very influential in theoretical morphology .
Life
Halle was born in Liepāja in 1923 and came to Riga with his family in 1929 . In 1940 they went to the USA. From 1941 to 1943 he studied mechanical engineering at the City College of New York . In 1943 Halle was drafted into the army and released in 1946, whereupon he studied linguistics at the University of Chicago and graduated in 1948 with a master's degree. He then studied at Columbia University with Roman Jakobson , became a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951 and received a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1955. -Title. He worked u. a. with Juri Lotman . In 1963 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1988 to the National Academy of Sciences . In 1996 he was at MIT emeritus , researched and published, however, continue. Halle spoke German , Yiddish , Latvian , Russian , Hebrew and English . He lived in Cambridge with his wife Rosamond . The two had three sons: David, John and Timothy.
