Moses Capsali
Mose Capsali , also Mose Kapsali (born around 1420 in Crete , Republic of Venice ; died around 1495 in Istanbul , Ottoman Empire ) was the Grand Rabbi of Istanbul ( Hahambaşı ).
Mose Capsali first studied with his father in Crete (then the Venetian colony of Candia ) and continued his studies in Italy and Germany. From around 1445 he worked as a rabbi in Constantinople and was confirmed in his office after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Capsali enjoyed great esteem both as a spiritual and communal leader and was appointed to the imperial council ( Dīwān ) by Sultan Mehmed II, together with the Mufti (Sheikh al-Islām) and the Christian patriarchs . He remained in office until his death in 1495. His successor as Chief Rabbi was Elia Misrachi .
Capsali emphatically represented rabbinic Judaism and fought off rapprochement with Karaiteism .
