Moshe Appelbaum
Moshe Appelbaum ( Hebrew משה אפעלבוים, Yiddish Mosheh Apelboym , also Mosheh Applebaum , Moses Appelbaum ; born 1887 in Mszczonów , Russian Empire ; died 1931 in Krakow , Poland ) was a Jewish-Polish painter, printmaker and stage designer.
Life
Maurycy Apfelbaum received a traditional Jewish upbringing and showed great talent for drawing from an early age. Since he saw no possibility of realizing his artistic ambitions in the traditionally Jewish living environment, he left his parents' home at the age of 15 and hired himself as an assistant to a painter. In 1903 he got a job as a graphic designer in a local textile company. In 1905 he went to Vienna and attended the art college there . He traveled through Germany and the Netherlands and came to England in 1907 , where he attended an art school in Liverpool for two years . He lived in London until 1916 , where his first, highly acclaimed exhibition took place in 1918. Nevertheless, he returned to Poland in 1919 and lived in Warsaw. There he was co-founder of a Jewish artists' association in 1921 and worked a. a. also for Yiddish theaters , including at the Warsaw Yiddish Art Theater (WIKT) and in Międzyrzec Podlaski together with Hirsch – Liber Podolak. He was one of the pioneers of a modern stage design and took up constructivist and expressionist stylistic devices. In the 1920s he created pictures for the synagogues of Łomża and Bedzin . According to Hans Vollmer, these frescoes are no longer preserved.
He participated in many art exhibitions across Europe. His pictures moved in many genres: landscape painting , still life , portrait painting . He often portrayed traditional life in the Jewish shtetl . He also incorporated elements of Cubism and Expressionism into his pictures . In 1931 he died of tuberculosis in Krakow .
In 1931 commemorative exhibitions were held in Warsaw and Katowice by the Jewish Society for the Dissemination of Fine Arts .
