history
Mszczonów was first mentioned in a document in 1245. Excavations from the mid-1990s have unearthed graves from the mid-twelfth century. In 1377 Mszczonów was granted city rights. The city was destroyed in several fires and then rebuilt. In 1778 a Jewish citizen was accepted into the city council for the first time.
Between the two world wars, around 2,200 Jews lived in Mszczonów, that is about half the population. The town had a lively Jewish life, and the children received Hebrew lessons. After the German conquest of Poland there were attacks and the murder of thirteen Jews by German soldiers. A little later the synagogue was set on fire, in which homeless Jews had settled and were now burned. In December 1939 a Judenrat was ordered and the Jews were marked with a Star of David bracelet. A forced ghetto was set up at the end of 1940, and on February 6, 1941, around 2000 Jews were deported from there to the Warsaw ghetto . On July 8, 1942, the remaining workers were also deported to Warsaw.
On September 6, 1939, the city was bombed by the German Air Force . At the end of the war, the city was 85% destroyed. The German occupation ended on January 16, 1945.
Between 1960 and 1972 Mszczonów was the seat of the Gromada Mszczonów . From 1975 to 1998 Mszczonów was part of the Skierniewice Voivodeship .
