Moss Icon was an experimental emocore or post-hardcore band from Annapolis , Maryland , USA , which existed from 1986 to 1991 .
history
The band was founded in 1986. In January 1988 they recorded their first 7 "record Hate in me on their own. The second record followed seven months later: Mahpuia Luta . Also in 1988 their LP Lyburnum Wits End Liberation, recorded by Les Lentz and Tony French, was released Fly .
In addition to a side project called Breathing Walker , on which all members of Moss Icon and three other musicians - Alexander Badertscher, Zak Fasciello, Tim Horner - worked, the third 7 "of the band appeared in 1991, in which the band broke up Named Memorial , and an LP was also released as a split with the band Silver Bearing .
Ebullition Records then released an album in 1994 with all of Memorial's songs as well as the split LP and some live recordings of the band.
In 2001 the band got together again to play some concerts - with the prevented Mark Laurence being represented on drums by Zak Fusciello.
The band had a left-wing political claim and condemned the activities of the US government in Nicaragua and Guatemala against the left forces there and showed solidarity with the indigenous people of America.
style
The band is considered to be the style setting for the emocore genre, but also had an influence on the emerging grunge . Especially as the band worked through the differentiated and more conscious handling of the style elements already known from earlier DC bands such as Rites of Spring , such as the loud-quiet - and shouted-clean sung - scheme, they had an extreme influence on the subgenre. The music is characterized by the explosive outbursts of screams, as well as repetitive, trance-like melody schemes.
Their sound was described by Andy Radin , a former bassist for the Screamo band Funeral Diner :
- "Moss Icon strips the 'emo' element down to the core, and adds a great deal of intricate, arpeggiated guitar melody (by Tonie Joy, later of Born Against , Lava, Universal Order of Armageddon, etc.) with a strong focus on loud / soft dynamics. The vocals, too, break new ground by building up to actual top-of-the-lungs screaming at songs' climaxes. "
