Born Against was an American New York hardcore band that was formed in 1989 and split up in 1993.

history

The band was founded in early 1989 by guitarist Adam Nathanson, bassist Neil Burke, previously with Life's Blood , singer Sam McPheeters and drummer John Guzman. Guzman was replaced shortly afterwards by drummer George. After a single appearance, he was replaced by Nigel Schreiber in July 1989. In this line-up, the group took on demo recordings for a sampler Murderers Among Us , which was released on McPheeters' own label Vermiform Records. At the end of the year Burke and Schreiber left the band. In March 1990, bassist Javier Villegas and drummer Darryl Kahan joined the line-up. In 1990 followed with Born Against , whereupon Daryl Kahan could be heard as drummer, and Eulogy the first two singles. Various tours followed the release of the singles. Towards the end of the year, drummer Kahan was replaced by Jon Hiltz. In 1991 the band appeared on the sampler Give Me Back , which was released on Ebullition Records . In the same year, the debut album Nine Patriotic Hymns for Children was released on Vermiform Records. In late 1991, bassist Villegas left the band and was replaced by bassist Bret Blue. This was followed by various tours, including a European tour . The band then worked on their new album, although work on this was interrupted in July 1992 when Hiltz left. During the recordings for Battle Hymns of the Race War Melissa York was represented on the drummer, although she was never heard at a gig. The album was due to be released in 1993. In early 1993, Nathanson and McPheeters had relocated to Jersey City . Bassist Tonie Joy and drummer Brooks Headley joined the line-up as the new bass player, before further tours followed. The band can also be heard on other samplers and split releases, including a 1993 split release with Screeching Weasel on Lookout! Records , and another in the same year with Universal Armageddon on Gravity Records and 1994 with Man Is the Bastard on Vermiform Records. In July 1993 the band played their last concert.

After that, some members formed new bands, such as singer McPheeter's Men's Recovery Project or Nathanson's Young Pioneers . Tonie Joy and Brooks Headley continued to work on their Universal Order of Armageddon project. After drummer Kahan left the band, he worked on band projects such as Assück and Citizen's Arrest . A few years later the label Kill Rock Stars became aware of the band, which re-released the compilation The Rebel Sound of Shit and Failure in 2002, the sound carrier containing rare recordings of past single and split releases. In addition, Nine Patriotic Hyms and Battle Hymns were released on record. In 2004, McPheeters turned to a new project called Wrangler Brutes .

style

According to Paul Kott, the single Eulogy speaks out against the trend of Krishna core bands like Shelter to convert to the Krishna faith . According to Matthias Mader in his book New York Hardcore. The Way it Was ... surprise the band on the album Nine Patriotic Hymns for Children in songs like Mount the Pavement , Shroud and Test Pattern by abrupt breaks and frequent changes of tempo , similar to the early works of No Means No . Only the vocals are typical for New York City hardcore. Lyrically one has to do with "a very crude attack on the Christian mendacity of the American consumer society". This is in contrast to the scene, which in his opinion is musically and, since the songs often deal with topics like straight edge , also lyrically stagnant. The songs have a progressive character. According to Kenjamin of punknews.org , the band's lyrics were heavily influenced by Reaganomics , the presidential election of George HW Bush and the First Gulf War on the two albums . Sarcasm and satire are common stylistic devices in the texts . The lyrics are angry and aggressive , according to pitchfork.com, and should encourage rethinking the ideologies of Youth of Today or Judge .

Groups like Boysetsfire , Metroschifter and Refused cite Born Against as an influence.
