action

A single father works as a bridge keeper on a drawbridge on a lake that is crossed by a railway line. When a ship comes, the bridge has to be pulled up. One day the father takes his 8 year old son to work. The son previously saw a woman board the train who was obviously doing drugs.

At the bridge, the father goes into the engine room and sends his son to the end of the lake. A ship passes by, the bridge is being pulled up. The train, which according to the timetable is supposed to arrive an hour later, has already reached the bridge. The son notices the arriving train and tries to warn his father who cannot see the train. The son tries to lower the bridge himself, but falls into the gears. The father is faced with the choice of saving his son and causing the train to crash, or lowering the bridge and thus killing his son. The father chooses his duty and lowers the bridge.

The people on the train did not notice that a boy had died in the rescue act. Only the drug addict knows because she was looking out of the train window at that moment. The father goes to another city and meets the woman, who is no longer a drug addict, who is holding a baby.
