Mother Hood eV is a federal parents' initiative to protect mother and child during pregnancy , childbirth and the first year of life . The trigger for founding the initiative was an impending shortage of freelance midwives from summer 2015, which the parents wanted to oppose. Mother Hood is active in numerous regional groups throughout Germany. In addition, the association is a member of the network of parents' initiatives for birth culture and is internationally networked.

Founding history

In February 2014 Nürnberger Versicherung announced that it was withdrawing from professional liability insurance for freelance midwives . At this point in time, the Nürnberger Versicherung was part of an insurance association which, without the participation of the Nürnberger, was in danger of collapse, as no other insurance company was willing to take over the part that became available. This would have had the effect of a professional ban for freelance midwives in summer 2015 , since midwives, as members of the health professions , are obliged to take out professional liability insurance.

The news of the imminent end of the freelance midwives hit the social media, while the response in the print media was rather subdued. Women and mothers who still wanted to have children responded in particular. On the same day, some parents founded the midwifery support group on Facebook , which was initially a rallying point for the parents' protest and generated more than 60,000 members within 24 hours. In the months that followed, numerous demonstrations, vigils and other protests were organized from this group. In order to be able to work professionally as a parents' initiative , the non-profit organization Mother Hood was founded a year later by the active members.

activities

As a parents 'protest, the parents' initiative started the “Meet your MPs” campaign in 2014, in which parents informed over 100 members of the state and Bundestag about the threat of undersupply in midwives and delivery rooms within a few months . To this day, club activists meet regularly with politicians and government representatives at local, state and federal levels.

In cooperation with Mother Hood, the film “The Safe Birth” went on a cinema tour in 2017 and was shown in numerous cities with subsequent panel discussions. In the same year, the actress Lisa Martinek became the official ambassador of Mother Hood eV The association received special media attention in the summer of 2017 with a "travel warning" for pregnant women due to the insufficient supply in the field of obstetrics in some regions of Germany. Since then, Mother Hood representatives have been regularly invited to television and radio interviews and discussions to report on obstetrics problems, such as: B. in Frau TV (WDR), on Volle Kanne (ZDF) and in the country time (Deutschlandfunk).

While the impending professional ban for freelance midwives as a result of active protests and political work could be averted in 2014 through the introduction of a security surcharge, the overall situation in obstetric care during pregnancy, childbirth and the so-called postpartum period continued to be difficult. Already when the association was founded In March 2015, a large part of the work was no longer just demonstrations and protests, but a variety of activities. Today, Mother Hood works in the scientific field with the implementation of studies and the translation of relevant specialist texts. At the political and technical level, representatives of the association sit at round tables and in numerous committees (e.g. the Federal Joint Committee , G-BA). In addition, Mother Hood publishes its own publications on current issues and information at regular intervals.

In April 2019, a board member of the association spoke as an expert before the Children's Commission of the German Bundestag about the grievances in obstetrics and the threatening effects on children's health. As part of the legislative process for the Midwifery Reform Act (HebRefG), which introduces a full academization of midwifery training in Germany , Mother Hood was heard as an expert for a hearing before the health committee in June 2019 .

During the corona pandemic in Germany, the association acts as a contact point for worried pregnant women and families and offers reliable and up-to-date information on pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding in connection with COVID-19 at a glance .

In June 2020 Mother Hood e. V. together with the International Society for Pre- and Perinatal Psychology and Medicine eV , ISPPM, started the helpline after a difficult birth . It serves as a low-threshold contact point for people with difficult or stressful childbirth experience to be able to talk about the birth.
