particularities

The Motorola Moto G (own spelling: moto g / internal designation: XT1031, XT1032, XT1033, XT1034 / code name “falcon”) is a smartphone that was introduced by the manufacturer Motorola on November 1, 2013. It has been available in Brazil and the European Union since November 13, 2013 , in the United States and Canada since December 2, 2013, and in Asia since January 14, 2014 .

The Moto G is closely related to the high-end smartphone Moto X released in August 2013, but differs in terms of processor, gesture control and camera resolution, making it a cheaper entry-level and mid-range model. In contrast to the Moto X, the backs of the Moto G are removable and can be replaced by different colored backs (shells) or magnetically fixed flip shells, which automatically turn on the screen when opened. The Moto G was the best-selling smartphone in Motorola's company history after just six months.

Specifications

hardware

The smartphone has a 4.5 inch IPS screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels ("HD"). This results in a point density of 329 ppi.

The Moto G is equipped with a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm quad-core processor Snapdragon 400 (MSM8x26), 1 GB RAM, 8 or 16 GB memory and a Qualcomm Adreno 305 GPU . At the beginning of July 2014, the Moto G 4G was released as a third model variant with 8 GB of memory, which also supports the LTE cellular standard and offers a microSD memory expansion .

The mobile phone is operated using the touchscreen, the volume buttons and the on / off switch. The Moto G uses a micro SIM card . A dual SIM variant is available in some regions. Mono speakers are located on the back to the left of the camera.

software

The smartphone was delivered with Android 4.3.1 "Jelly Bean" , Android version 4.4.4 "KitKat" was available since July 2014 and Android 5.0.2 "Lollipop" since March 6, 2015. Version 5.1 was released in October 2015, together with a fix for the Stagefright security vulnerability.

The Android system was taken over by Motorola almost unchanged, the equipment was only supplemented by the Google apps, a camera app and the manufacturer's own apps "Motorola Migrate", "Assist", "Moto Care" and "Alert".

Beginning in December 2013, Motorola has the source code for the Moto G published. This gives users the option of adapting the components of the operating system to suit their own requirements.

Availability

The smartphone was announced in São Paulo on November 13, 2013 by Dennis Woodside, CEO of Motorola Mobility , and the 8 GB version was available in Germany just a few days later. The first 16 GB models reached customers before the end of 2013.

Moto G LTE

(Alternative names: Motorola Moto G 4G / Internal name: XT1039, XT1040, XT1045 / code name "peregrine")

In July 2014, an LTE variant with the internal name XT1039 (de-Version) and Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) was released. Android 5.1 (Lollipop) was now available, and the Stagefright vulnerability was also closed. Compared to the "normal" variants, this model also has an LTE radio module with 100/50 Mbit / s installed. Like its smaller predecessor, it only has 8 GB of internal memory, but like the Moto G (2nd generation) it has a micro SD slot behind the battery cover. The 5 megapixel camera and the 4.5 inch screen with gorilla glass again correspond to the older model.

Moto G (2nd generation)

Moto G (2nd generation)

(Internal designation: XT1068 / code name "titan")

On September 5, 2014, a second generation (internal designation: XT1072 / code name "thea") of the Moto G appeared with the dimensions 141.5 × 70.7 mm and a bulge of 6 to 11 mm and a weight of 149 g. The changes compared to the first generation include the larger 5.0-inch screen with the previous resolution but a point density of 294 ppi, a microSD card slot and dual SIM capability.

An LTE version with only one SIM slot appeared later. Instead of LPDDR2, LPDDR3 work memory is used. The device was delivered with Android 4.4.4 KitKat and received Android version 5.0.2 Lollipop after release and Android 6.0 Marshmallow at the end of March 2016 . The rear camera is eight megapixels, the front two, and there are stereo speakers.

Moto G3

In July 2015, the third generation (internal designation: XT1540 / code name "osprey") of the Moto G was presented, like the previous model with a 5-inch screen in 720p resolution. The main changes to the second generation consist of an improved 13-megapixel camera (from the Nexus 6 ) at the rear, a 5-megapixel camera at the front and the fact that the device is waterproof according to IPX7 . The device also has an LTE module. The loudspeaker, however, only offers mono playback. The dimensions are 142.1 mm × 72.4 mm × 11.6 mm, it weighs 155 g. A Snapdragon 410 quad core processor is used. There are two versions available with eight and 16 gigabytes of storage space, with one or two gigabytes of RAM. A microSD slot is also available. The device is delivered with Android Lollipop version 5.1.1; Android 6.0.1 can be installed later, originally in the version from January 2016, subsequently updated to the Android patch status from April 2017 through security updates.

With the introduction of the successors Moto G4 and G4 Plus, it was renamed Moto G3.

The 4th generation models of the Moto G are available in the variants Moto G4 Play, Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus. The Moto G4 Play has a removable battery. Since March 2017, the upgrade to Android 7.0 (Nougat) with security updates as of December 2016 has also been possible in Germany; the update to Android 8.1 (Oreo) with security updates as of December 2018 has been possible in Germany for the Moto G4 Plus since the end of April 2019.
