The Motorwerk Berlin is a building ensemble in the Berlin district of Weißensee , An der Industriebahn 12, which consists of an event hall, art studios and co-working spaces. The hall was built as a factory building for the production of electric motors and was known as Halle Weißensee in the 1990s .

history

The listed ensemble was built from 1921 by Bruno Buch and Karl Herrmann for the Ziehl-Abegg electricity company.

Groundbreaking special electric motors ( external rotors ) were manufactured in the complex until the Second World War . These are what give today's engine factory its name. In addition, converters were made with which the first airships to cross the Atlantic were equipped. The F.T. generators, also developed by Ziehl-Abegg , later worked in all Zeppelin airships and Lufthansa aircraft .

In the GDR , electric motors and dynamos continued to be produced on the site, but also repaired. The sub-plants of VEB Isokond and VEB Starkstrom-Anlagenbau were housed there. Both state-owned companies produced electrical products.

After the political change , the building was known under the name Die Halle for its concerts and events. In 1991 the first Mayday in Germany took place there. In addition to numerous other techno events in the following years, Kraftwerk , The Velvet Underground , Motörhead , Marianne Rosenberg , the Red Hot Chili Peppers , Zucchero , the Ramones and many more made guest appearances there . In this building Wim Wenders filmed the concert scene for the film Far Far Away, So Close! in which Lou Reed sings Why can't I be good .
