The Motława ( German Mottlau ) is a river in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship . The Mottlau rises as the »Höhische Mottlau« from the Großer Rokittker See south of Liebschau on the edge of the Pomeranian ridge . The length of the river is 64.7 km, the area of the catchment area 1511.3 km².
Course description
The Motława flows through the territory of the municipality of Starogard Gdański ( Prussian Stargard ), the city of Tczew ( Dirschau ), the municipalities of Suchy Dąb ( Zugdam ) and Pruszcz Gdański ( Praust ), and crosses the city of Gdansk , where the Wyspa Spichrzów ( Storage island).
Here it is divided into three arms; the main arm flows into the Dead Vistula near the area that is now also known as Polski Hak . Poland acquired this area from the Free City of Danzig in 1920 . In the district of Gęsia Karczma ( Ganskrug ) to the northeast of the city center, the Motława flows into the Dead Vistula.
Overall, the river changes direction several times. It also crosses several lakes, such as the Jezioro Rokickie ; here he is referred to as Szpęgawa . The Motlawa merges with the Dead Vistula in Kanał Wielki .
The Radaune ( Radunia ) flows into the Motlawa .
history
In the 16th and 17th centuries a canal was built that connects the Motława with the port of Danzig. It is called Nowa Motława and is still used.
The Motlawa caused a flood in Gdansk in 2001 due to the backwater from the estuary.
