Scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) mapped it. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1980 after the amateur radio operator John Andrew Stagnaro (1911-1979) from La Crescenta-Montrose , California , who had radio links to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station , McMurdo Station , Palmer Station and Siple in the 1970s Station for the scientists working there to communicate with their families.
