particularities | highest mountain in New Ireland |
The Mount Taron is the highest mountain of Hans Meyer Mountains on the Papua New Guinea- island New Ireland in the Pacific Ocean . As the highest mountain in New Ireland, it is also the highest peak in the Bismarck Archipelago . With a height of 2340 or 2379 m, it is the eight most prominent mountain in Oceania (excluding New Guinea ) and makes New Ireland the fourth highest island of Papua New Guinea, the eighth highest island on the continent of Australia and one of the 50 highest islands in the world .
It is twelve kilometers northwest of the town of Taron , after which it is named, in the southeast of the elongated island. This also represents the nearest coast; in the west it is 28 km to the Bismarcksee . The interior of the island is hardly populated, and all the slopes of Mount Taron are heavily forested. It's hard to get to because there is only one coastal road. The two main rivers of New Ireland arise near the summit, the Weitin River less than two kilometers away, which flow into the sea on different sides. This is about 36 km long and up to 420 m wide.
