Muammer Birdal (born March 3, 1957 in Zonguldak ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Through his many years of work for Zonguldakspor and as a home grown man, he is very strongly associated with this club. Fan and club members regard him as one of the most important players in club history. He holds several club records. With 321 first division appearances for Zonguldakspor, he is the player with the most Süper Lig appearances in the club's history and with 401 he is in 19th place in the list of football players with the most Süper Lig appearances .

Player career

society

Birdal started his club football career in the youth department of his home club Zonguldakspor . This provincial club was initiated by a reform in Turkish football and was only founded in the summer of 1966 and, through the championship in the summer of 1973, achieved the first participation in the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the top division in Turkish football. Birdal made it to the professional team in the summer of 1975. He made his professional debut on December 24, 1975 in a cup match against Mersin İdman Yurdu . By the end of the season he made six appearances in the league. In the next three seasons Birdal came to more and more stakes before he was promoted to regular players in the 1979/80 season. In this season the team finished the 1st division completely surprisingly in 3rd place in the table and thus achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. As a defender, Birdal was one of the most successful goal scorers of his team with four first division goals. He also played a key role in the fact that his team, with 19 goals conceded, became the team with the fewest goals conceded after champions Trabzonspor . In the next season, Birdal consolidated his position within the team and rose thereby to the national player. His team finished the season in 7th place in the table and lagged behind the previous year's performance. In the 1981/82 season , the team found their strength again and finished the league in 4th place in the table. This achieved the second-best first division placement in the club's history. Birdal was also one of the most important players on his team this season. The following years Birdal's team fell short of expectations and recently even played against relegation. In the 1987/88 season , the team slipped early into the relegation region and did not manage to break free from this zone for the entire season. At the end of the season, the team rose from bottom of the table in the 2nd division. As the only bright spot this season, the team reached the semi-finals in the Turkish Cup of the 1987/88 season .

After relegation with Zonguldakspor Birdal decided to continue playing in the first division and therefore moved in the summer of 1988 to the southeast Turkish club Kahramanmaraşspor . Here he established himself straight away as a regular player. This club also missed relegation at the end of the season, which is why Birdal changed clubs again. This time he hired the southern Turkish first division club Adana Demirspor . After relegation was missed with this club at the end of the season, Birdal decided this time to make his way to the second division. In the second division, however, Birdal's team managed to get promoted again. So Birdal played again in the first division after one season. After the promotion, the team played again against relegation. After this could not be averted, Birdal decided to leave the club.

In the summer he moved to his hometown club Zonguldakspor because of this. With this he played a season in the 2nd division before ending his playing career in the summer of 1993.

National team

Birdal was founded in 1981 by the Turkish national team coach Özkan Sümer under a WM1982 - qualifying match against the Welsh national team in the squad of the Turkish national team nominated. It was in this game that Birdal made his international debut. A month later, he then completed his second and last international match.

In 1982 he was in the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and played here against the Hungarian U-21 national team, his only U-21 international match. In this party, Birdal was well over 21 years old.

Coaching career

Birdal began working as head coach in 1996 and was the first to oversee third division club Çaycumaspor , a team from Birdal's home province of Zonguldak . A year later he took over Kilimlispor, another third division club in his home province. He then trained in sequence again Çaycumaspor and Kilimlispor before he began to train in spring 2002 Zonguldakspor . At the end of the season he led this club to the championship of the TFF 3rd Lig and thus to promotion to the TFF 2nd Lig . After this success he left the club again. For the new season he then took over Karamanaspor .

In the summer of 2004 he took over Zonguldakspor a second time and was in charge of this club until January 2005.
