The mugimaki flycatcher ( Ficedula Mugimaki ) is a small songbirds from the family of Fliegenschnäpper , which is used in East Asia. The name is derived from the Japanese word mugimaki (wheat sowing ). The species is monotypical .

Appearance

The Mugimaki snapper reaches a length of 13 to 13.5 centimeters and a weight of 13 to 15 grams. The wingspan is about 21 to 24 centimeters. The bird is strikingly colorful, but looks rather plump with a round head and a short beak. There is a pronounced gender dimorphism :

Young male

In adult males the upper side is slate gray to black. A wide white stripe above and behind the eyes stands out from this. The chest area is colored in a light orange, which runs towards the belly and the flanks. The middle of the abdomen and the underside of the tail are white. The black upper wings show a large white field, which is formed by the large arm covers and the tips of the middle arm covers. The umbrella springs are lined with white. Males in juvenile plumage resemble adult males in their appearance, but the back plumage is more grayish and the orange chest plumage is even paler.

The females are far less noticeably colored. Instead of the black back color of the male, they have a brownish back plumage. The orange of the breast plumage is also paler. In addition, the white color at the base of the tail is missing and the white spot and edge of the swinging feathers is less pronounced.

distribution and habitat

The Mugimaki flycatcher has an extensive distribution area. The breeding areas extend from northeast China and North Korea across the Russian Far East and the Sakhalin Island in the east to Tomsk and Krasnoyarsk in the west. The wintering areas are in southern China and Southeast Asia, including Malaysia , Thailand , Indonesia and the Philippines . During the migration , the Mugimaki flycatcher is often found in Japan , especially on the smaller islands off the main islands. The species is common on the Korean Peninsula , and the Mugimaki flycatcher can also be found in eastern China and Taiwan .

Within its breeding area, the species prefers old deciduous forests as well as moist boreal forests both in the lowlands and in mountainous regions. During the migration and in the wintering areas it can also be found in coniferous forests.

Due to its large distribution area, the Mugimaki flycatcher is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN .

The Mugimaki flycatcher feeds primarily on flying insects that it prey on in the treetops.
