Mukdahan ( Thai เทศบาล เมือง มุกดาหาร ) is a city ( Thesaban Mueang ) in the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Mukdahan of the Mukdahan Province . The province of Mukdahan is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the Isan .

geography

Mukdahan is located on the west bank of the Mekong , opposite to Laos belonging Province Sawannakhet . The provincial capital is almost 750 kilometers from the capital Bangkok .

The province's most important water resource is the Mekong.

In Mukdahan there is a ferry to Laos; You can get a 30-day visa at the border crossing there.

The second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge from Mukdahan across the Mekong to Savannakhet (Laos) has been a further improvement in Laos' transport links since January 9, 2007 .

Economy and Importance

In Mukdahan there is an interesting marketplace for Vietnamese handicrafts ( e.g. lacquer work ), which via Laos has not always actually passed all customs controls. In the area around Mukdahan there are numerous companies for the traditional weaving of Isan, such as the khit .

history

The city and the surrounding area have long been under the influence of Laotian rulers and the Khmer , whose traces are still visible today. Mukdahan became the provincial capital in 1982 when the government established Mukdahan Province as part of the decentralization of the administration.

  • Wat Yot Khaeo Siwichai (Thai: วัด ยอด แก้ว ศรี วิชัย ) - Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) directly on the banks of the Mekong with very beautiful wall paintings.
  • Wat Sri Mongkon Tai (Thai: วัด ศรี มงคล ใต้ ) - temple in a peculiar mixed style (Thai-Vietnamese-Chinese) that was built by Vietnamese refugees.
  • Phu Manorom (Thai: ภู มโนรมย์ ) - Mountain just outside of Mukdahan with a very nice view of the city and the Mekong.
