Savannakhet ( Laotian ແຂວງ ສະ ຫວັນ ນະ ເຂດ ) is a province ( Khwaeng ) in the south of Laos . The capital is the city ​​of the same name, Savannakhet, on the Mekong .

The border is formed by the province of Khammuan in the north, the province of Salavan in the south, Vietnam in the east and Thailand in the west .

During the Franco-Thai War , the city of Savannakhet was bombed and later occupied by the Thai army. It was not until the end of 2006, when the second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge was built, that a direct connection to Thailand was opened.

About 40 km north of the city of Sepon there is an open cast copper mine with more than 3400 employees, which represents the most important economic basis in an otherwise structurally weak region. The mining is operated by Lane Xang Minerals Limited (LXML) , in which MMG has a 90% interest and the Laotian government has a 10% interest. The largest shareholder of MMG is China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) with about 74% . In 2015, Sepon produced 89.253 tons of copper and has mined more than 1.2 million ounces of gold since 2002.
