KALIBER35 Munich International Short Film Festival is an annual English-language short film festival . In accordance with its character as a learning and experimentation field for the young generation and its other economic conditions, it is exclusively dedicated to short films as an indicator of innovations and trends that the branch located in the greater Munich area is trying to develop.

history

As part of the presentation of their own short film productions at festivals in Germany and around the world, the representatives of the Münchner Filmwerkstatt encountered many short films that never found their way to Munich, so that the association decided in 2005 to organize a short film festival in Munich itself. The principles here are to show no German films and only Bavarian premieres in the international competition - films that have not yet found their way to Bavaria. The festival director is Martin Blankemeyer .

2006

In 2006 the festival took place for the first time from March 24th to 26th, in the Mathäser-Filmpalast under the name "MUNICH INTERNATIONAL short film festival". Even then there was an international competition with five program blocks named and compiled after the five flavors “Sweet”, “Sour”, “Salty”, “Bitter” and “Unami”. The first festival counted around 500 visitors. The submissions were coordinated with other film festivals such as the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival .

2007

In 2007, the festival moved to the date it has held since then, right before the “big” Munich Film Festival . On June 15 and 16, it brought the German Short Film Award to Munich for the first time , which has since been an integral part of the annual festival program as Best of Germany. This is the first time the festival has shown German-language films.

2008

In 2008 the festival moved to the Gloria Palast directly on the Stachus - and for the first time lasted a whole week, from Thursday, June 12th to Wednesday, June 18th. In addition to the international competition and Best of Germany, there were two program blocks for the first time with films by members and friends of the Munich film workshop Boyfriends (including The Golden Nazi Campire by Absam 2 - The Secret of Kottlitz Castle ) and Girlfriends. This concept has since been continued as Friends & Family. This year the number of visitors exceeded the thousand-visitor mark for the first time.

2009

In 2009, filmmakers were invited to the festival in Munich for the first time to participate in the international competition, which initiated a dialogue between filmmakers and the public on site. Further innovations in 2009 were the two-day masterclass held for the first time with director Mark W. Travis and a series of workshops held by the writer and filmmaker Klaus Harald Wittig , the film composer Matthias Hornschuh and the director Hansjörg Thurn ( Barefoot to the Neck , The Wandering Whore ) . For the first time, trade visitors joined the visitors to the film screenings; around 200 of them came.

2010

In 2010 the festival passed the two thousand visitor mark for the first time on June 17-23 - the performance on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. was the first sold-out in the history of the festival. This year, the festival was also funded for the first time by the cultural department of the City of Munich and the masterclass, which was held by the script researcher Christopher Vogler in 2009 , was funded by the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern . The festival organizers achieved a special highlight in the international competition: thanks to skilful programming and thanks to the good reputation that the festival had now also earned internationally, the European premiere of the film The New Tenants , which has just won the Oscar , was able to take place here in the “Salty” program as best short film.

2011

In 2011 the festival with all its components international competition, Best of Germany, Friends & Family and the masterclass, held by producer Roger Corman , took place from June 16-22 - under its new name KALIBER35. This year, for the first time, there is also another competition: Kurz & Knapp, the Kinosportcup. Here filmmakers (teams) are called upon to write, plan, shoot, cut, set to music and play a complete short film within just 35 hours.

2012

In 2012, the Gloria Palast, the main building of the KALIBER35 Munich International Short Film Festival, was renovated and the festival was therefore held for the first time at various venues. The opening evening on Thursday, June 21st and the end of the festival from Monday, June 25th to Wednesday, June 27th took place in the film.coop in Munich's Westend, the festival weekend in between in the city cinemas on Sonnenstraße.
