The Municipio Carangas is a district in the Oruro department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Carangas is the northernmost of the three municipalities in the province of Puerto de Mejillones . It borders the province of Sabaya to the east, north and west and the municipality of La Rivera to the south .
The municipality comprises sixteen localities, the central place is the village of the same name Carangas with 34 inhabitants ( 2012 census ) in the southeastern part of the district, the largest village is Triandino with 306 inhabitants.

The climate in the region is semi-arid , the annual precipitation is only 200 mm (see climate diagram Sabaya). From April to November there is a dry season with monthly values of less than 10 mm of precipitation, the wet season in summer is short and the rain is not very productive. The annual average temperature is almost 7 ° C without significant fluctuations in the course of the year, but with strong daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent changes in frost .
The vegetation in the region corresponds to the semi-arid puna . It is treeless and mainly consists of thorn bushes , grasses , succulents and cushion plants . It is used economically as a llama , alpaca and sheep pasture .

The population of the Municipio Carangas has increased several times over in the past two decades:
- 1992 : 164 inhabitants ( census )
- 2001 : 353 inhabitants (census)
- 2012 : 840 inhabitants (census)
The population density of the municipality at the last census of 2012 was 3.4 inhabitants / km², the proportion of the urban population was 0 percent, the life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 57.7 years.
The literacy rate among those over 19 is 96 percent, 99 percent for men and 92 percent for women ( 2001 ).
