The municipality of La Rivera is a district in the Oruro department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The municipality of La Rivera is the middle of the three municipalities in the province of Puerto de Mejillones . It borders the Municipio Carangas to the north, the Sabaya Province to the west and east , the Municipio Todos Santos to the southwest , and the Republic of Chile to the south .
The municipality comprises a total of only eleven localities, the central place of the municipality is the village of La Rivera with 189 inhabitants ( 2012 ) in the northern part of the district.
geography
The climate in the region is semi-arid , the annual precipitation is only 200 mm (see climate diagram). From April to November there is a dry season with monthly values of less than 10 mm of precipitation, the wet season in summer is short and the rain is not very productive. The annual average temperature is almost 7 ° C without significant fluctuations in the course of the year, but with strong daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent changes in frost .
The vegetation in the region corresponds to the semi-arid puna . It is treeless and mainly consists of thorn bushes , grasses , succulents and cushion plants . It is used economically as a llama , alpaca and sheep pasture .

The population of the municipality of La Rivera has almost tripled in the past two decades:
- 1992 : 221 inhabitants ( census )
- 2001 : 390 inhabitants (census)
- 2012 : 509 inhabitants (census)
The population density of the municipality at the last census in 2012 was 1.9 inhabitants / km², the proportion of the urban population is 0 percent. The life expectancy of newborns in 2001 was 58.1 years.
The literacy rate among those over 19 is 92 percent, 97 percent for men and 86 percent for women ( 2001 ).

structure
The municipality is in contrast to most of Municipalities of Bolivia, because of its small size does not continue in cantons ( cantones ) divided. The only notable place in the municipality is the main town of La Rivera .
