The former Mottschieß ammunition depot is located in Weithart , northeast of Mottschieß , a district of Pfullendorf , and west of Levertsweiler , a suburb of Ostrach .

The fenced-in area with buildings, watchtowers and warehouses is therefore located both in the district of Pfullendorf and in the district of Ostrach, two municipalities in the Sigmaringen district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

In 1961, the federal government bought the 34.1-hectare district VII / 9 of the Pfullendorfer forest rodete him and taught here a location ammunition defeat of the army of Colonel General von Fritsch-Kaserne (now Staufer barracks ) in Pfullendorf and the barracks in Weingarten ( Local ammunition defeat 543/1, Defense District Command 543).

The warehouse was also used to store nuclear warheads during the Cold War . From 1969, the US armed forces set up a special weapons store here in a specially fenced area within the actual camp with watchtowers, buildings and warehouses. It was guarded by the security platoon of the 2nd US Army Field Artillery Detachment ( USAFAD ), 512th US Army Artillery Group ( USAAG ), supported by the escort battery 10 of the 10th Artillery Regiment of the 10th Panzer Division of the Bundeswehr from Pfullendorf.

In June 1981, protested in Pfullendorf in a notified and approved peace march of Green , Young Socialists and various denominational peace groups against the NATO double-track decision of 12 December 1979, and especially against the storage of nuclear weapons in Mottschießer forest. Four hundred police officers were waiting for the demonstrators, reinforced guards in the Pfullendorf garrison and German and American soldiers ready to fire in Mottschieß. There was concern in the city: the shops had closed an hour earlier than usual and the restaurants did not open. A drugstore protected itself with chipboard. The citizens of the city and their children stayed in their homes. This was preceded by an announcement by Pfullendorf mayor Hans Ruck, who advised calm, prudence and the safe keeping of the cars. From the city lake, the long, colorful demonstration, equipped with countless flags and posters, moved through the city center to the market square to celebrate the so-called “die -in ”, a form of non-violent resistance in which demonstrators approached a siren howl suddenly thrown to the ground and symbolically died the sudden atomic death.

Soon afterwards the huge warehouses were cleared and the units stationed there disbanded. As a result, there was no formal military use. The property became the property of the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BImA) and is managed from Stuttgart as a property in southern and northern Württemberg.

The search for buyers was unsuccessful. In between, the halls were used by ZG Raiffeisen for the storage of potatoes, and the grounds were also used by soldiers from the Special Operations Training Center for training purposes.

Most recently, the area designated by the Bundeswehr as a "training area" was offered for sale in 2010. Since then it has been used militarily by the Bundeswehr again; however, this use is not limited in time.

If somebody is interested in the site at some point, the BImA would contact the two municipalities, because a possible subsequent use is only possible if the existing zoning plans are observed.
