Murray Day

Murray Day , OBE (born 1931 or 1932 ) is a retired New Zealand sports official . Among other things, he was President of the New Zealand Squash Federation and the World Squash Federation .

Life

Day has been married since 1957 and has two sons with his wife. From 1960 until his retirement in 1990 he worked as an auditor at Deloitte , most recently as a partner. He was a member of the New Zealand Army , from which he retired with the rank of captain . At the regional level he was also active as a player in squash.

Functionary career

His first official post at the national level occurred at Day in 1969, when he became president of the New Zealand Squash Association was, at that time under the name of New Zealand Squash Rackets Association changed its name. He held this office until 1971, before he took over the office of association delegate at the world association, the then International Squash Rackets Association . In 1971 he was also the main organizer of the men's team championship in Palmerston North , the first world championship in squash on New Zealand soil. Day was elected second president of the International Squash Rackets Association in 1975 and held the office until 1981. During this time the association grew from 12 to 45 members, a declared goal of Days. From its founding in 1992 to 1995, he led the continental federation of Oceania, the Oceania Squash Federation , as its president. This was followed by other functions outside of squash , including eleven years as a board member of the New Zealand Golf Association.

Awards

He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1980 for his services in the field of sports and education . He is also a lifetime member of the New Zealand Squash Federation (1978), the British Squash Federation (1977) and the Oceania Squash Federation, as well as an honorary member of the World Squash Federation. In 2009 he was inducted into the New Zealand Squash Hall of Fame .
