Murupara is a place in the Whakatāne District of the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
In the Māori language, “ Murupara ” means “to wipe the mud away”.
geography
The place is located around 62 km southwest of Whakatāne and around 53 km southeast of Rotorua , in the southern part of the 23 km long and up to 10 km wide plain of the Rangitaiki River between the Kaingaroa Forest and the Ikawhenua Range which is part of the Te Urewera National Park are.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,656 inhabitants, 9.8% fewer than in the 2006 census.
economy
In the early 1900s, pine trees began to be planted around the place. This area, known today as Kaingaroa Forest , comprises around 1,400 km² of pine forest , on which the place lives today. Forestry is the town's main livelihood. The wood is transported to the paper mills in Kawerau or to the port of Tauranga for shipping and export .

Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 38 leads through Murupara , which connects the town to the northwest with the New Zealand State Highway 5 and can be reached via Rotorua . The State Highway 38 goes to the other side of Wairoa on the east coast of the North Island, but provided on its way through the mountains just under 70 km unpaved and only with gravel. In the direction of Whakatāne a well-developed road leads partly through the valley of the Rangitaiki River .
Rail transport
Murupara is the terminus of the Murupara Branch , which is connected to the East Coast Main Trunk Railway via Kawerau west of Edgecumbe . Only goods are transported over the route.
Air traffic
Around 6 km northwest of Galatea is a small airport with a grass runway a good 1000 m long.
Attractions
In 1925, around 8 km west of Murupara, petroglyphs were found on a rock overhang, which, although the date of origin is unknown, indicate an early settlement of the area. Canoes are shown in the drawings.
