The Museo Storico della Motorizzazione Militare is an Italian military museum in Rome . It specializes in military vehicles of the Italian army and documents their motorization in the 20th century. The museum is located in a large military base in Cecchignola in the south of the Italian capital.

exhibition

The museum comprises six exhibition halls and an outdoor area with around 50,000 square meters of exhibition space. While the halls have been gradually renovated in recent years, the outdoor area is still waiting for a reorganization. Around 300 trucks and automobiles used for military and civil purposes , around 60 motorcycles and 60 armored vehicles of various types are on display . In addition, there are some propeller planes and helicopters that were in service with the army. The Arturo-Mercanti-Halle houses the museum management, a specialist library and an archive.

Among the oldtimers are a number of Fiat models up to 1945 , including trucks of the types Fiat 15 and 18 from the time of the First World War , as well as models of the types Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 , Lancia Aprilia and Alfa Romeo Matta , which the military used in the last Participated in the remake of the Mille Miglia for years . For the time of the Cold War , among other things, the Fiat Campagnola, which was then widely used in Italy . Armored vehicles are mainly exhibited in the outdoor area. The history of reconstruction after the war is documented by tanks of the types M4 Sherman , M24 Chaffee , M26 Pershing , M36 Jackson , M47 Patton and M60 , the self- propelled howitzers M7 Priest , M44 and M55 , and the armored recovery vehicles M32 and M74 . There are also some more modern vehicles, including the prototype of the Centauro and Puma armored vehicles .

The small tank museum, which is attached to the infantry museum in Rome, is of importance in this context . A possible consolidation of the holdings has not yet been decided. Some tanks are also on display in the Cavalry Museum in Pinerolo , northern Italy .

In the Città militare della Cecchignola there are various army commands, military schools and the NATO Defense College . Due to military operations, the museum can usually only be visited on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Visits on working days require advance notice by telephone. The closest metro station is Laurentina (Linea B).
