Musine Kokalari (also Muhsine ; born February 10, 1917 in Adana , Vilâyet Adana , Ottoman Empire ; † August 14, 1983 in Rrëshen , People's Socialist Republic of Albania ) was an Albanian writer. She is considered to be the first woman who was able to publish a book in Albania.

Life

As the daughter of the Kokalari family from Gjirokastra , she moved to Albania in 1920 . To study literature, she went from 1938 to the University of La Sapienza in Rome and wrote her doctoral thesis on Naim Frashëri in 1941 . Then she returned to Albania.

She wrote down folk tales and wrote her first book, which was published in Tirana in 1941. This work is considered to be the first book by a woman in Albania. In 1944 she published a book of short stories and sketches and another collection of fairy tales.

After the Second World War , on January 17, 1946, she was accused of being an "enemy of the people" and arrested. Before her arrest, she had written letters to the Allies asking that free elections and freedom of thought should be guaranteed in Albania. She received a twenty-year prison term and spent 18 years in Burrel Prison from the time of King Ahmet Zogu . In 1964 she was released. She was not allowed to write for the rest of her life and had to work in a labor camp in Rrëshen (today's Mirdita community ) for the rest of her life . Musine Kokalari developed cancer and worked as a street sweeper. She was even denied treatment in a hospital.

Appreciation

The social democrat Kokalari was posthumously proclaimed a "martyr of democracy" by Albanian President Sali Berisha . A school in the capital Tirana bears her name.

Since their works were banned and destroyed, no more copies have survived today.
