Mustafa Al-Kadhimi
Mustafa Al-Kadhimi ( Arabic مصطفى الكاظمي, DMG Muṣṭafā al-Kāẓimī ) ( maiden name: Mustafa Abdul-Latif Mishatat ) (* 1967 in Baghdad ) is an independent Iraqi politician , journalist and Prime Minister of Iraq since May 7, 2020 .
Life
After studying law at the private Al-Thurat College in Baghdad, Al-Kadhimi left Iraq during Saddam Hussein's dictatorship in 1985. He lived in Iran , the United States , Germany and for several years in Great Britain.
After the beginning of the Iraq war in 2003, he returned to his native country. In addition to his work as director of the Iraq Memory Foundation founded by Kanan Makiya in London , which was supposed to document the crimes of Saddam Hussein, he was co-founder of a media network from which the television station al-Iraqia emerged .
Starting in 2010, he was editor-in-chief of the Iraqi edition of the news magazine Newsweek for three years . From June 2016 to April 2020 he was director of the Iraqi secret service and was responsible for the intelligence service fight against the Islamic State .
After Prime Minister Adil Abd al-Mahdi submitted his resignation as a result of protests in October 2019, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi was one of the candidates for the post of Prime Minister.
On April 9, 2020, he was commissioned by President Barham Salih to form a government after two other candidates-designate, Mohammed Taufiq Allawi and Adnan al-Zurfi , had failed in this task and Adil Abd al-Mahdi therefore remained in office . On May 6, 2020, the majority of the Iraqi parliament expressed its confidence in Al-Kadhimi, but not all of the ministers in the cabinet he presented, so these posts will remain vacant for the time being. In an emergency meeting the following day, he and his cabinet were sworn in.
